Some vaccines can cause encephalitis and other complications, but these unpleasant side effects are rare. There is also no link between immunizations and autism<\/a> or other serious health problems, assures the National Academy of Sciences, the US national academy of sciences.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The first such comprehensive analysis of the scientific evidence on vaccine safety in 17 years was carried out by a committee set up by the academy’s subordinate Institute of Medicine. Considering the controversial issue of vaccine safety, more than a thousand scientific studies were analysed. In a 667-page report published on Thursday, the 16-member committee presented convincing evidence that vaccinations can cause 14 different health problems, including seizures, encephalitis and fainting, but noted that such complications are extremely rare. The committee concluded that some vaccines can cause other complications, such as allergic reactions or joint pain. However, no link has been found between immunisation and the most dangerous conditions that raise so much doubt: autism and type I diabetes.<\/p>\n

– With the start of the school year, it is worth making sure children have all their vaccinations up to date. The report on the safety of these eight vaccines comes at a particularly convenient time,” Ellen Wright Clayton, professor of paediatrics and law at Vanderbilt University, who chaired the committee, wrote in a statement. – The findings should reassure parents. Several medical conditions are linked to vaccination, but these side effects are extremely rare.<\/p>\n

Since the 1986 Childhood Vaccination Act came into force, the Institute of Medicine, on behalf of the US Congress, has already conducted a vaccine safety study 11 times. The last report was published in 1994. Based on these reports, the US Department of Health and Human Services administers a compensation programme for families of children following vaccine-induced injuries. In recent years, vaccine safety has become the subject of intense debate. Some parents are concerned that the increasing number of compulsory vaccinations may cause too many complications. This argument is most often invoked by those who refuse to vaccinate their children. Meanwhile, to the growing concern of the authorities, it has already been observed that mass avoidance of vaccination has led to a resurgence of life-threatening diseases such as measles. There has been a major measles outbreak in Europe this year, and the number of cases in the US continues to rise.<\/p>\n

The Commission concludes that there is convincing evidence that the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) trivalent vaccine can lead to seizures in some children, triggered by fever, but at the same time reassures that the symptoms are almost always short-lived and have never once led to serious complications. The MMR vaccine can cause a rare form of encephalitis in people with serious immune conditions, warns the committee. In a small number of patients, the chickenpox vaccine can cause brain swelling, pneumonia, hepatitis, meningitis, hemiplegia and smallpox, the committee states. However, most of these ailments affect people with immune system diseases.<\/p>\n

The publication of the report was welcomed by supporters of child vaccination. However, critics point out that the committee clearly acknowledged that there is still not enough evidence to dispel once and for all some of the doubts that have been growing around vaccination.<\/p>\n

– The lack of enough scientific evidence to conclusively establish that certain vaccines cause – or do not cause – serious conditions such as encephalitis, encephalopathy, stroke, asthma, autism, sudden cot death, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, lupus and blood diseases is problematic when the law makes vaccination of children mandatory and recommends it for adults, Barbara Loe Fisher of the National Immunisation Information Centre wrote in an email.<\/p>\n

– Acknowledging that science still does not fully understand how vaccines affect the human body – including how, when, why and for whom they may be a risk – the committee confirms that further scientific research on vaccine safety is needed, Fisher added.<\/p>\n
