It is not a parenting failure of naughty children, as many teachers and even psychologists claim. The results of a Dutch study leave no illusions: the brain of ADHD<\/a> sufferers is slightly smaller, has a different structure and may develop more slowly. – Every psychiatrist knows that ADHD is a disease. However, this research is very important, especially because the Dutch did it on a very large group of people, which is not easy – Professor Piotr Galecki, national consultant in psychiatry, comments on the report of the prestigious journal ‘The Lancet Psychiatry’.<\/p>\n

The tests were conducted at Radboud University in the Netherlands. There were 1,713 participants with ADHD and 1,529 healthy people. Remarkably, they included both young children and adults – the youngest participant in the study was four years old and the oldest was 63. The brains of all participants were examined using MRI.<\/p>\n

– It is extremely valuable that we were able to carry out the study on such a large group of patients with ADHD, because contrary to appearances, it is not a common disease, adds Prof. Piotr Galecki. The researchers measured the total brain volume of each person and analysed the structure of seven areas associated with the disorder. ADHD patients had slightly smaller brains. Differences were particularly evident in the amygdala, which is responsible for emotions. The doctors emphasise that although the discrepancies were small, the results of the study are crucial for identifying the changes that occur in this disease. This is because they show the developmental delays in many areas of the brain typical of ADHD. The differences observed during the study were most pronounced in children, but also noticeable in adult patients with the condition.<\/p>\n

Hyperactive or naughty?<\/h4>\n

ADHD is most often diagnosed in children who are hyperactive, impulsive, unable to focus and pay attention, thus causing behavioural problems and learning difficulties at school. Some, however, question the existence of the condition. Former deputy health minister Boleslaw Piecha said at one meeting of the parliamentary health committee that his father cured his ADHD with a few spankings.<\/p>\n

Dutch researchers hope that their discovery will contribute to stopping the stigmatisation of children with ADHD and sticking them with the patch of ‘ill-mannered bullies’. The mother of ten-year-old Wojtek from Warsaw, who was diagnosed with ADHD by a child psychiatrist, says that at her son’s school, even some teachers did not take the information about his illness seriously. Some suggested that it was a result of a lack of discipline and stress-free upbringing,” she says. In the meantime, the treatment that has been applied is showing results. Wojtek has improved his grades and is less excitable.<\/p>\n

Psychiatrists in no doubt<\/h4>\n

– Every psychiatrist knows that ADHD is a disease, says Professor Piotr Ga\u0142ecki. – However, such research is very important, especially that the Dutch did it on a very large group, which is not easy at all, because ADHD, contrary to appearances, is not a common illness, emphasises the specialist.<\/p>\n

– Many people believe that certain behaviours can be controlled by willpower, he adds. Parents of ADHD children often hear that their children lack discipline. However, the frontal lobes, which are responsible for our social relations and socialisation, are not able to stop the behaviour resulting from disorders of the amygdala, not least because they developed later in evolution and are younger than these older brain structures. ‘I hope that research proving that there are differences in the brain structure of ADHD patients will contribute to greater awareness of the condition,’ says the psychiatrist.<\/p>\n

It can be treated<\/h4>\n

Child psychiatrist Dr Monika Szewczuk-Bogus\u0142awska believes that for many years scientists have been searching for the causes that lead to the development of ADHD. – The results of successive neuroimaging studies assessing deficits in functioning and abnormalities within various brain structures, confirm the biological basis of this disease, she says. The doctor points out that ADHD is diagnosed very precisely on the basis of specific criteria included in the Classification of Mental Disorders.<\/p>\n

– Depending on the severity of the symptoms, various methods are used in the treatment: psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, other methods, e.g.: eeg-biofeedback. However, it should be borne in mind that the choice of method should be decided by a doctor, preferably a child psychiatrist,’ he stresses.<\/p>\n

And Prof. Piotr Galecki says another very important thing about the results of the Dutch studies: “They are very important also because they convince us that people with mental disorders must not be stigmatised.”<\/p>\n
