In order to diagnose dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties, a fairly lengthy process is needed (about 4-5 hours), as it requires a psychologist and educator to carefully examine the developmental level of the many complex cognitive processes involved in reading and writing, and to determine the extent to which the individual deviates from the age norm in these skills.
Tests should be carried out on a number of levels, such as:
- check the level of general intelligence,
- determine the degree of visual and auditory memory,
- test visual and auditory perception,
- eye-hand coordination,
- manual dexterity,
- lateralisation,
- concentration of attention,
- personality traits and the specifics of the child’s emotional functioning and their impact on learning processes.
