There is no cure for autism. Some pharmacological agents may alleviate some symptoms of autism, e.g. reduce hyperactivity, improve attention span. Because gastrointestinal problems are common in people with autism spectrum disorders, food allergies and intolerances should be ruled out. Dairy products and gluten can be discontinued for the child. Limiting simple sugars in the diet often brings improvement. A variety of health problems (e.g. abdominal pain, diarrhoea, trouble sleeping, frequent infections, etc.) are observed in many people with autism spectrum disorders. If left untreated, they can significantly impair the overall functioning of people with autism, or ZA.
Autism and other holistic developmental disorders are treated using appropriate therapeutic interventions. However, there is no single therapy method that can be identified as the most effective and appropriate for each child. Therapy needs to be individualised for the person with ASD, taking into account their age, needs and the depth of the disorder. It should build on the child’s strengths and reduce the observed deficits. Effective therapy should be intensive, comprehensive and cover a range of different problems for the child. A good therapy centre is one where the whole family is involved, not just the child, as it is important to support the parents in understanding autism and caring for their child.
