Untreated ADHD can entail many negative consequences and health complications. These include:

  • low self-esteem;
  • poorer social skills;
  • reduced school achievement; poorer vocational functioning; lower socio-economic status;
  • weaker relationships with family members, peers and emotional partners;
  • depression (this and other mood disorders are associated with poorer quality of life and a greater risk of suicide attempts);
  • anxiety disorders;
  • oppositional defiant disorder;
  • conduct disorders;
  • antisocial personality;
  • substance abuse, addictions;
  • increased risk of excessive body weight;
  • increased risk of physical health problems, such as those associated with accidents and injuries;
  • increased risk of falling into conflict with the law.
