Untreated ADHD can entail many negative consequences and health complications. These include:
- low self-esteem;
- poorer social skills;
- reduced school achievement; poorer vocational functioning; lower socio-economic status;
- weaker relationships with family members, peers and emotional partners;
- depression (this and other mood disorders are associated with poorer quality of life and a greater risk of suicide attempts);
- anxiety disorders;
- oppositional defiant disorder;
- conduct disorders;
- antisocial personality;
- substance abuse, addictions;
- increased risk of excessive body weight;
- increased risk of physical health problems, such as those associated with accidents and injuries;
- increased risk of falling into conflict with the law.
