Some drugs used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can cause priapism, a prolonged and painful erection of the penis, in boys, reports AP.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), painful erections can be a side effect of preparations containing methylphenidate, a dopamine-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor used to treat ADHD, among other things. It is found in drugs such as ritalin, concerta and daytrana.

The FDA encourages doctors to inform parents about this effect of these drugs, who in turn should discuss the issue with their sons being treated for hyperactivity. This is because painful erections can last for more than four hours.

The name priapism is derived from the ancient god Priap depicted with an erect member. The ailment itself can have various causes. In one in three cases, it is not known at all, but in one in five affected men it is related to the use of medication.

So far, it has been known that priapism can be caused by papaverine, a drug with a strong diastolic effect, and alprostadil, used in the treatment of thrombophlebitis to improve blood supply to the limbs. Other causes of prolonged erections may include sickle cell anaemia and spinal cord injuries. (PAP)
